A wooden boat carrying 38 individuals arrived at Boca do Rio beach in the Algarve region late this Friday afternoon. Among the passengers were 36 adults and two children of various nationalities, all showing signs of dehydration, as reported by CNN Portugal and confirmed by the Local Command of the Maritime Police of Lagos.
The vessel is believed to have departed from North Africa, with the alert being raised around 8:05 PM by a nearby citizen. The individuals on board were assisted by the GNR, while authorities remain on-site gathering additional information and providing medical assistance. Details regarding the exact origin of the boat, the nationalities of those on board, the reason for their journey, and their current health status remain unclear.
Upon arrival, Maritime Police officers noted the individuals' weak health conditions and promptly offered assistance. Teams from the GNR, Vila do Bispo Civil Protection, INEM, and volunteer firefighters from Vila do Bispo and Lagos were also deployed to conduct clinical evaluations and ensure the provision of water and food. According to CNN Portugal, some of the boat's passengers were transferred to hospitals in Portimão and Faro.
