Portugal is on high alert as a severe heatwave is set to sweep across the country, with temperatures expected to exceed 40°C from north to south in the coming days.
Meteorological Warnings Issued
All continental districts are under meteorological warnings, with Bragança and Vila Real facing a red alert this weekend. Viseu, Guarda, and Castelo Branco are under an orange alert, joined by Portalegre, Évora, and Beja on Sunday. The rest of the country, except Faro, is under a yellow alert.
Record-Breaking Temperatures Expected
The heatwave, driven by an anticyclone north of the Azores moving east/northeast, will bring hot and dry air from North Africa. Moura, Castro Verde, and Serpa could see temperatures hit 44°C by Tuesday, with Beja and Évora reaching 43°C. Mirandela is forecasted to hit 43°C on Sunday, while Lisbon and Setúbal may reach 40°C on Tuesday.
Health and Safety Advisory
Authorities urge the public to stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, seek shade during peak hours (11 AM - 5 PM), and use sunscreen. Travel during cooler hours is recommended to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Marine Temperatures
The Algarve coast will see sea temperatures around 23°C/24°C, warmer in the eastern region between Faro and Vila Real de Santo António.
