A British family-of-four tragically lost their lives in a devastating car crash in Portugal, shortly after arriving for a holiday. The incident occurred after they picked up their hire car at Faro International Airport, leading to a head-on collision with another vehicle.
The victims included two 20-year-old twins, their 55-year-old father, 51-year-old mother, and a 19-year-old girlfriend of one of the siblings. The driver of the other vehicle, identified as Ruben Goncalves from Almodovar, also reportedly died in the crash.
The tragic accident happened around 1.40am on Saturday on the IP2 motorway near Castro Verde. The family was traveling north from the Algarve towards Mourão in the District of Évora, where the twins' parents originally hailed from and were returning for the summer holidays.
The Portuguese National Republican Guard is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident. In response to the tragedy, town hall officials have declared two days of mourning starting from Sunday.
A spokesman expressed the community's grief:
"It is with great sadness that the Municipality announces this information, offering its condolences to the families and friends of the victims. All activities and events promoted by the Municipality are canceled for the entire weekend."
