The Portuguese government has announced nine critical decisions regarding forest fires, following a Council of Ministers meeting in Lisbon. The Minister of Internal Administration, Maria Lúcia Amaral, detailed these measures aimed at combating and preventing wildfires during a press conference.
- Extension of the Alert Situation: The government has decided to renew the state of alert until 23:59 on August 13, due to prolonged high temperatures and the high risk of rural fires. This extension maintains existing prohibitions on agricultural and recreational activities in rural areas.
- Enhanced Firefighting Resources: The government emphasized the continued mobilization of firefighting resources, including thousands of operatives, vehicles, aerial means, and drones, without any reduction in efforts.
- Military Investment in Firefighting: Authorization was granted for the Armed Forces to purchase two firefighting systems for C-130 aircraft, with a total approved expenditure of 16 million euros, including crew training.
- Civic Mobilization Appeal: A call was made for all Portuguese citizens to adjust their behaviors to reduce fire risks, highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in prevention efforts.
- Criminal Policy Adjustments: The government plans to prioritize and potentially increase penalties for crimes related to fire ignition, with these changes reflected in the criminal policy law for 2025-2027.
- Forest Intervention Plan 2050: The proposal for a long-term forest intervention plan, 'Futuro Mais Verde', was revisited, aiming for approval by year-end. The plan includes annual investments of 246 million euros until 2050, focusing on prevention, forest economy valorization, property clarification, and governance model improvements.
- Water Stabilization Efforts: Actions to stabilize water lines are underway to prevent contamination of drinking water, particularly in the Lima and Homem rivers.
- Support for Fire Victims: The government is in contact with local authorities and businesses to assess damages, primarily affecting natural and agricultural assets, with minimal impact on homes and factories.
- Structural Support Regime: A new, permanent support system for damages caused by large fires is being prepared, aiming for implementation this summer. This system will ensure effective support for affected homes, businesses, and farmers, with simplified processes.
Government Solidarity: The Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaro, expressed solidarity with affected populations and gratitude to firefighters, military and civil authorities, and volunteers. The government is mobilizing all possible efforts for effective firefighting and future prevention, urging public cooperation in risk mitigation behaviors.
