Prime Minister's Strong Statement on April 25th

On Saturday, the acting Prime Minister of Portugal emphasized that those who struggle with difference and tolerance are unworthy of fully experiencing the significance of April 25th. This statement comes in the wake of confrontations in Lisbon involving participants from an unauthorized far-right demonstration.

"April 25th symbolizes freedom, respect, and tolerance for differing thoughts. It embodies the essence of democracy. Therefore, those who cannot coexist with difference and tolerance are not deserving of fully living the meaning of this date. I regret that," Montenegro stated.

The Prime Minister made these remarks while participating in a 5-kilometer walk event during the 5th edition of the Europe Marathon held in Aveiro.

Reaction to Recent Clashes

Regarding the clashes that occurred on Friday, Montenegro stated that when excesses happen, it is essential for someone to restore order and ensure everyone's freedom. He expressed confidence that the authorities acted appropriately to maintain public tranquility and order.

"I believe the authorities did what was necessary to keep peace. However, when behaviors exceed the rules, the individuals responsible must be held accountable," he added.

Montenegro also indicated that he does not fear that the electoral campaign will be overshadowed by such movements, as he believes that, despite some exceptions, democracy in Portugal is functioning well and political parties respect each other.

Police Operation Overview

According to the PSP (Public Security Police), the police operation related to the April 25th events in Lisbon on Friday ended with three arrests, including leaders from the Ergue-te party and the far-right group 1143, along with four individuals identified and two police officers injured.

The commander of the 1st Police Division of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command, Iúri Rodrigues, highlighted that two planned events were prohibited by the competent authority. These included a concentration organized by the Ergue-te party and a counter-demonstration, which justified the mobilization of police forces to enforce the administrative prohibition.

Celebration Events Proceed Smoothly

As for the traditional parade celebrating April 25th, which runs from Praça Marquês de Pombal to Avenida Liberdade, it reportedly took place without any incidents.

Iúri Rodrigues confirmed that the situation was managed effectively, allowing the celebrations to continue peacefully, showcasing the resilience of democratic values in Portugal.
