Two PSP officers from the Rato police station in Lisbon, currently in preventive detention over torture allegations, have been suspended from duty and stripped of their salaries. The officers, aged 25 and 26, were arrested last Thursday in an operation led by prosecutors from the Lisbon Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP). Searches were conducted at the PSP stations in Rato and Bairro Alto, as well as at the officers' homes.
Violent assaults on small-time drug dealers are at the heart of the investigation. At least ten individuals are believed to have been beaten during identification procedures. In one particularly harrowing case, captured on video, the officers allegedly attempted to sodomize a victim with a baton. Beyond torture, the officers are under investigation for other crimes, including qualified physical offenses, embezzlement, and falsifications.
The suspects were reported to the DIAP by their superiors approximately nine months ago, following internal complaints. The national director of the PSP, Luís Carrilho, expressed his disappointment over the incident but assured the public that the police force remains trustworthy.
