Loures Municipality Demolishes 64 Precarious Homes
The Loures City Council ordered the demolition of 64 precarious homes, leaving many residents, including Eliane and Francisco, without shelter. Eliane saw her home destroyed for the third time, while Francisco lost the roof over his head and that of his few-month-old son.
The Demolition Process
In the Talude Militar neighborhood, the demolition process was carried out under the watchful eyes of the Rapid Intervention Team (EIR) of the PSP, after residents attempted to prevent the demolitions. The municipality stated that this action is part of its "policy to combat illegal occupation of the territory," affecting 103 adults and 58 minors.
Residents' Plight
Residents were given only 48 hours' notice, leaving them with little time to find alternative housing. "Where can we find a house in 48 hours? If we had the means to find a house in 48 hours, no one would be here," said Eliane, who now faces the uncertainty of where she and her family will sleep.
Municipal Justification
The municipality argues that this intervention is necessary to stop the growth of illegal construction, which has been worsening in recent years. However, the Movimento Vida Justa condemns the action, stating that it will only increase the number of homeless people.
Social and Political Implications
The demolitions have sparked outrage among residents and activists, who criticize the lack of dialogue and support from the authorities. "They protect animals more than human beings," lamented one resident, highlighting the perceived injustice of the situation.
Municipal Response
The Loures City Council maintains that it will not tolerate the proliferation of illegal constructions, emphasizing the need for legal and safe housing solutions. The municipality has offered to assist residents from Loures with one month's rent and a deposit, while those from other municipalities are advised to return to their places of origin.
