A severe wildfire has erupted in the Montesinho Natural Park, near the village of Aveleda in Bragança, mobilizing a massive response from emergency services. Approximately 200 firefighters, supported by five aerial units, are currently battling the flames, which have been consuming a bush area in the Union of Parishes of Aveleda and Rio de Onor.
The fire has two active fronts, and there's concern that its spread could threaten parts of the protected area of Montesinho Natural Park. The affected zone is located about 10 kilometers from the city of Bragança.
Challenges on the Ground The efforts to control the wildfire are being hampered by strong winds and high temperatures. However, João Noel Afonso, the sub-regional commander of Terras de Trás-os-Montes, reported to Lusa news agency that the fire is beginning to yield to the combat efforts, thanks to reinforcements arriving throughout the afternoon.
The alert was raised at 12:07, according to the Civil Protection website. By 17:35, the scene included 202 firefighters, five aerial means, and 67 vehicles.
