Admiral Gouveia e Melo is expected to formally announce his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic in March 2024. This information was reported by SIC.
The current Chief of Staff of the Navy has already informed Defense Minister Nuno Melo that he does not wish to be reappointed to his position, which concludes at the end of this year. Gouveia e Melo is set to transition to retirement in March, thus becoming eligible to launch his campaign for Belém, aiming to succeed Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
The presidential election is scheduled for 2026. Gouveia e Melo gained public prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he led the task force responsible for the vaccination plan from March to September 2021. His successful management of the vaccination effort brought him significant public recognition and admiration.
