The Algarve's Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) has proposed the creation of working groups with Alentejo and Andalusia to enhance synergies in strategic areas for the development of the Euroregion. This initiative aims to foster sustainable and cohesive development across these regions.
In a letter to the President of the Junta of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, and the President of CCDR Alentejo, António Ceia da Silva, José Apolinårio, President of CCDR Algarve, called for a reflection on this matter. The proposal includes forming these groups by the end of July 2025 and presenting a two-year work plan by September 30. These groups will involve public and private entities, universities, research centers, business associations, intermunicipal communities, municipalities, and local development organizations.
Key priorities include:
- Water, biodiversity, and soil health to promote sustainable natural resource management and ensure water resilience.
- Mobility and cross-border connectivity, focusing on infrastructure like the new international bridge between Alcoutim and SanlĂșcar de Guadiana, and improving rail links such as Faro-Huelva-Seville.
- Economy, innovation, and blue growth, with an emphasis on the Guadiana River's navigability, desalination, algae, and marine protection.
- Culture, heritage, and tourism, advocating for integrated valorization of cultural heritage and joint cultural events.
- Civil protection and climate change, proposing interoperable technological platforms and joint wildfire prevention actions.
A special working group on housing is also proposed to share best practices and policies for affordable and social housing, supported by European cohesion funds.
Eurorregions are European political structures that link regions across different countries, fostering collaboration and shared development.
