Dozens gathered in Lisbon this Tuesday to protest against the "arms race," coinciding with the NATO Summit in The Hague. The demonstration, organized by the CGTP union and the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation, carried the message "Peace yes! NATO no!"
Protesters, holding banners with doves and the word "peace," voiced their opposition to military blocs and called for a collective security system. Isabel Camarinha, from the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation, emphasized the need to dissolve NATO, criticizing its role in global conflicts and the disproportionate military spending by member states.
The protest also highlighted the ongoing crisis in Gaza, with calls for Portugal to recognize the State of Palestine. Camarinha condemned the recent U.S. airstrikes in Iran, warning of escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Dinis Lourenço, a CGTP national council member, criticized the government's increased military budget, urging investment in public services instead. The protest concluded with plans for another rally on July 5th in Lisbon, advocating for peace in the Middle East.
