Eugénio Cardoso Lopes, known artistically as Gimba, the composer behind this year's Grand March of Lisbon, shared his inspiration with Olhares de Lisboa. His creation, 'Alma de Lisboa', draws from the eternal inspiration that the city provides. Gimba, a four-time winner of the Grand March competition, emphasizes the city's vibrant culture and history as his muse.
The Soul of Lisbon is portrayed as a melody that resonates with everyone, transcending origins. Gimba's approach to songwriting is organic, starting with the chorus and building the narrative around it. His previous winning marches, including 'A marcha mais alegre da Avenida' in 2005, showcase his deep connection with Lisbon's festive spirit.
Beyond the monetary prize, Gimba values the honor of being among esteemed composers. He also composes for the March of São Vicente, reflecting his love for Lisbon's diverse neighborhoods. His workshop, 'Oficina do Gimba', nurtures future composers, emphasizing the importance of singing in Portuguese.
Gimba's influence extends to promoting Portuguese music, collaborating with artists like José Cid and Ana Bacalhau. He celebrates the growing appreciation for national music, a trend he has championed since the early 2000s.
