Lisbon's Santo António Weddings showcase the city's multicultural spirit, with 16 couples from 9 different nationalities set to tie the knot in a celebration of love and tradition. The event, a hallmark of Lisbon's cultural calendar, emphasizes the city's openness and inclusivity.
Carlos Moedas, the mayor of Lisbon, highlighted the significance of the weddings, stating, "Our city is truly international, and that is our greatest strength." The couples, aged between 27 and 50, represent 23 of Lisbon's 24 parishes, with a mix of Portuguese locals and international participants from Brazil, Italy, Spain, and Paraguay.
The Santo António Weddings, a tradition since 1958, were revived by the Lisbon City Council in 1997 after a hiatus. This year's selection process saw 39 applications, with the chosen couples reflecting a wide range of professions, from urban hygiene workers to engineers and lawyers.
Pedro Moreira, president of EGEAC – Lisbon Culture, praised the event as a symbol of love, union, and hope, strengthening community ties. The Festas de Lisboa, including the weddings, represent a significant investment, with over €2 million allocated, largely supported by sponsors.
Among the couples are Mariana Saavedra and Francesco Bontempi, a luso-Brazilian and Italian pair who met in the USA, and Liliana Fonseca and Jorge Oliveira, long-time partners from Marvila. Both couples shared their excitement for being part of this unique tradition.
The weddings are a testament to Lisbon's evolving identity, blending tradition with the vibrant diversity of its residents.
