In 2024, Portugal celebrated 36,633 marriages, with 1,044 (2.84%) being between same-sex couples. Lisbon stood out, hosting 201 of these unions, which accounts for 19% of the national total. Within the capital, same-sex marriages made up 7% of all 2,782 marriages.
The data, sourced from Pordata, INE, and Eurostat, highlights Lisbon and Porto as the epicenters for same-sex unions. These marriages have been gaining prominence over the years, increasing from 1.89% in 2021 to 2.73% in 2023.
Male couples were slightly more likely to formalize their relationships, with 526 marriages compared to 518 for female couples.
Borba emerged as the municipality with the highest rate of same-sex marriages relative to total unions, at 16.7%. This was followed by Mora (12.5%), and Marvão and Mação (10% each).
Traditional Catholic weddings continue to decline, with only 7,094 celebrated in 2024, overshadowed by 28,361 civil ceremonies.
Additional insights reveal that in 2023, there were 17,430 divorces, including 121 involving same-sex couples. Odivelas stands out as the only municipality without any marriages, due to the absence of a Civil Registry Office.
