Eduardo Jesus, the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment, and Culture, has formally apologized to Rubina Leal, the President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. This comes after a heated parliamentary session discussing the 2025 Budget for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ORAM 2025), where Jesus used offensive language towards opposition deputies.
In his communication, Jesus expressed regret and apologized for the incident, stating he had no intention to offend the deputies or the parliamentary institution. He emphasized his respect for the Assembly's role and function, attributing his remarks to the heated political debate.
The controversy arose when Jesus used terms like "gaja", "bardamerda", and "palhaço-mor" against opposition deputies, including Sílvia Silva and Sancha Campanella (PS) and Rafael Nunes (JPP). Initially, Jesus defended his language, arguing the words were "in the dictionary" and part of the "unique parliamentary environment".
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from regional political figures. The PS and JPP have formally protested against Jesus's behavior, with some calling for his resignation. Guida Vieira, a former deputy, publicly demanded Jesus's dismissal over the remarks.
This episode highlights the intense political tensions in Madeira's Legislative Assembly, raising questions about decorum and respect in political discourse.
