Rubina Leal, President of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, has responded to the controversial insults made by Eduardo Jesus, the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment, and Culture, against three opposition deputies in the regional parliament. Leal addressed the issue upon entering the religious celebrations dedicated to the Body of God, taking place today in Funchal.
Leal stated she does not downplay the "whispers" of the Secretary but highlighted the apology sent by the official to her person, thereby encompassing all those offended.
When questioned by journalists about whether any 'punishment' would be applied to Eduardo Jesus, the parliament president clarified that, according to the regulations, it is not her role to do so. However, she emphasized her commitment to "the dignity of that parliament," not tolerating "any kind of inappropriate discourse." She reinforced that "this will always be" her role and attitude.
Leal mentioned she only became aware of the comments through reports and investigated the facts, receiving an apology from Eduardo Jesus today, addressed to all deputies and the institution in his name.
"Since April 10th, my first public intervention, I have said and affirmed that whenever possible - obviously, I say when possible, because if I am not present, I cannot act accordingly - but whenever it is within my reach, what I will do is to dignify that Assembly, to elevate the discourse, and obviously, I do not accept a discourse that is destructive and discriminatory," stated Rubina Leal.
"I do not accept a discourse that is destructive and discriminatory," she declared, stressing the importance of the parliament's dignity. She acted with serenity and firmness, waiting for the events and the corrections made, and now that there is an apology, she considers the matter should be overcome so that the Assembly can function normally.
The Assembly President also emphasized the importance of approving the Regional Budget for 2025 and called for mutual respect and constructive dialogue among deputies.
Leal reaffirmed her commitment to the dignity of the Assembly and maintaining a high and respectful discourse.
Regarding her delayed response to the issue, Leal pointed out that "in life, everything has its time, and in politics, it is important not to react in the heat of the moment." She also noted that "it is important to have firmness, seriousness, and also to dignify the institutions." She clarified that what she did was "wait for the events, try to understand what happened, and listen to the statements made, including hearing the parties."
