Portugal's mainland is currently on high alert due to the increased risk of wildfires. As of Sunday morning, around 30 active incidents were reported, with the most concerning fires located in Vila Real. After a week-long battle, the wildfire in Ponte da Barca, Viana do Castelo, was finally declared under control.
Torgueda, Siralhelhos, and Vila Cova (Vila Real): From Control to Evacuation
Early Sunday morning, reports emerged of two wildfires raging through pine and brush areas in Torgueda and Siralhelhos, Vila Real. Over 220 personnel and 10 aerial units were deployed. Orlando Matos, commander of the Vila Real White Cross firefighters, expressed concerns over the fires' intense hotspots.
In Torgueda, fears grew as flames threatened the villages of Granja and Bisalhães, prompting the positioning of firefighting resources. By late morning, the mayor reported the fire in Arrabães (part of Torgueda) was "in the consolidation phase," posing no immediate danger.
In Siralhelhos, two active fronts were reported, with one advancing towards Gontães through pine forests. Mayor Alexandre Favaios noted the deployment of 110 men, 30 vehicles, and seven aerial units, with no villages or properties at risk at the time.
By midday, strong winds pushed flames towards Vila Cova village, leading to preventive evacuations. Elderly residents were moved to the village center near the parish church, supported by locals. Complaints arose over uncleared state-owned lands contributing to the fire's spread. By early afternoon, flames encircled the village, with shifting winds complicating firefighting efforts.
Sabrosa (Vila Real): Controlled After a Scare
The Sabrosa fire, which started Saturday afternoon, spread rapidly, threatening homes and necessitating the evacuation of 19 elderly from São Martinho de Anta nursing home. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries.
By Sunday morning, 80% of the fire's perimeter was under control, thanks to effective overnight efforts. However, strong winds remained a concern, potentially reversing progress.
Ponte da Barca: A Week-Long Battle Ends
The Ponte da Barca fire, active for over a week, was declared under control Sunday morning. Over 500 personnel and 170 vehicles were involved, with aerial support carefully deployed due to difficult terrain access.
At Least 35 Firefighters Injured in the Past Week
Last week's wildfires injured 35 firefighters nationwide, with one suffering severe burns in Penafiel. Portugal remains on alert until Thursday, with preventive measures in place amid forecasts of temperatures reaching up to 42°C in Santarém and Évora.
