Portugal Enters Winter Time This Sunday
Mainland Portugal and the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores will set their clocks back by one hour this Sunday morning, marking the official start of winter time.
When and How the Change Happens
In mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Region of Madeira, when the clock strikes 02:00 on Sunday morning (October 26), all clocks should be turned back 60 minutes to 01:00.
In the Autonomous Region of the Azores, the time change occurs at 01:00 on Sunday morning, moving clocks back to 00:00.
The Legal Framework and Future Changes
This time adjustment is governed by a 2000 European Union directive that establishes the biannual clock changes across member states. The directive mandates that clocks are moved forward one hour on the last Sunday of March and back one hour on the last Sunday of October each year, defining the beginning and end of daylight saving time.
Looking Ahead to 2026
The next time change is scheduled for March 29, 2026, when Portugal will switch back to summer time, advancing clocks by one hour.
This regular time adjustment affects millions of Portuguese citizens and visitors, influencing daily schedules, transportation timetables, and energy consumption patterns across the country.
