A 38-year-old woman from Barreiro, experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, tragically lost her baby after being redirected to a hospital over an hour away from her home. This dire situation arose due to a lack of available neonatal care slots in closer hospitals, including Setúbal, Santa Maria, and MAC. The INEM (National Institute of Medical Emergency) contacted these hospitals, only to find no vacancies in their neonatology units, forcing the expectant mother to seek care in Cascais.
This incident has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about the state of Portugal's healthcare system, particularly the impact of recent emergency department closures in the Margem Sul area. The government, however, denies any direct link between the hospital's emergency closures and this tragic outcome.
The story sheds light on the challenges faced by high-risk pregnant women in accessing timely and adequate medical care, emphasizing the need for systemic improvements to prevent such tragedies in the future.
