The first day of the trial carried the weight of the 12 years it took to get here. José Sócrates employed the same strategy seen in other phases of the process. The defense of the former prime minister has already filed over 100 appeals and incidents, with two more prepared for this Thursday.

15 out of the 21 defendants in the case were present in court, facing a total of 117 crimes. With 50 sessions already scheduled, over 500 witnesses are expected to testify.
Among the accused is the driver alleged by the Public Prosecutor's Office to have delivered envelopes containing cash to José Sócrates. João Perna expressed his desire to clarify everything and stated he would speak in court in the upcoming sessions.
Ricardo Salgado was notably absent. His lawyer claimed the former banker was unaware the trial had begun today. Salgado, suffering from Alzheimer's, is also accused. His defense criticized the court, arguing that the ex-banker is unable to defend himself.
