The Department of Arts and Humanities at the University of Algarve's Faculty of Human and Social Sciences is set to host the 21st edition of the Free History Course of the Algarve this June. This year's theme, "Forgotten Voices and Stories", aims to spotlight the overlooked characters and episodes from the region's past, moving away from the well-trodden narratives of major events and figures.
Focusing on the simple lives of ordinary people—such as slaves, fishermen, and children—the course will delve into aspects of community life that have faded from memory. Topics include the wisdom of the people, the lost arts of whaling in the Algarve, and the commemoration of the dead.
Course Highlights:
- June 3: João Pedro Bernardes explores "Between Forgetting and Memory: Rites, Sayings, and Taboos in Roman Necropolises of the Algarve".
- June 5: Jorge Fonseca discusses "Slavery in the Algarve During the Modern Era".
- June 11: José Carlos Barros takes participants on a journey to "Monte Gordo: From the Beach to the Hinterland".
- June 12: Miguel Reimão Costa sheds light on "Forgotten Voices of the Mountains: Stories of the Highlands and Their Inhabitants".
- June 17: Rui Soares reflects on "The Proverb, a Source of Cultural Revitalization".
- June 18: Nina Vieira dives into "Listening to the Whales of the Algarve Through History".
- June 24: Aurízia Anica addresses "Violence Against Children in 19th Century Algarve".
- June 26: Luís Filipe Oliveira concludes with "A Grave Without a Body? Paio Peres Correia in Tavira".
This unique course offers a rare glimpse into the Algarve's lesser-known historical narratives, providing a deeper understanding of the region's rich cultural tapestry.
