Portugal is facing increasing challenges in water management, with a continuous decrease in rainfall since 1960, especially affecting the southern region. In 2024, the Algarve recorded extreme drought levels and reservoirs at only 8-15% capacity. Despite above-average rainfall in March 2025, the scarcity trend persists.
On May 20, the ALGARVE 2030 Regional Program participated in the Luso-German Symposium 'Water Management and Greentech with a Focus on Water Scarcity', held at the Dom Pedro Congress Center in Vilamoura. Organized by the Luso-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the event gathered around 80 participants, including technology providers, potential users, sector associations, and experts.
The main goal was to promote cooperation between Portuguese and German companies and to showcase innovative technological solutions for efficient water management and green technologies, crucial for regions like the Algarve, severely impacted by water scarcity.
José Apolinário, President of the Algarve 2030 Program Steering Committee, was a keynote speaker. He presented 'The European Funds of the Algarve Regional Programme – support for companies climate transition', highlighting available support for business projects focused on the circular economy.
During his speech, companies in the region were invited to submit projects promoting water circularity and energy efficiency, key pillars for a more resilient, sustainable, and competitive economy.
The Algarve 2030 Regional Program reaffirms its commitment to supporting innovative solutions addressing the region's environmental challenges through strategic use of European funds.
