Dito Cujo Wines: Crafting Memorable Flavors in Algarve
João Caldeira's journey into viticulture began with a simple curiosity about planting a vineyard, leading to the birth of Dito Cujo. This Algarve-based wine brand is dedicated to producing flavors that linger in memory, showcasing the best of the region.
From Curiosity to Vineyard
In 2019, João, a native of Silves, seized the opportunity to transform a two-hectare argillaceous-calcareous terrain in Algoz into a thriving vineyard. Despite his background in hospitality, João's passion for viticulture was ignited during his time at a large estate in Alentejo, home to over 280 hectares of vineyards and 13 table grape varieties.
The Birth of Dito Cujo
Returning to his roots, João embarked on a vineyard planting project funded by European grants. With relentless effort, he cleared the land, planted the vines, and eventually harvested his first grapes. "My life changed radically, but completely spontaneously," João recalls.
A Partnership Forged in Passion
Recognizing the need for expertise, João partnered with enologist Dinis Gonçalves from Lagos. Together, they combined their knowledge and passion, resulting in the first harvest of exclusively selected grape varieties in 2022.
The Vineyard's Unique Offerings
The vineyard boasts eight grape varieties: Sauvignon Blanc, Arinto, Viosinho, and Moscatel for white wine, and Aragonês, Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, and Syrah for red wine. Despite the challenging sandy and rocky terrain, the vineyard produces exceptional fruits, reflecting the Algarve's unique essence.
Dito Cujo's Wine Portfolio
Currently, Dito Cujo offers Tinto, Branco, and Rosé from 2023, and Tinto and Branco from 2022. Each wine is tailored for different occasions, from balanced whites perfect for lunches to aromatic reds ideal for serene evenings.
Innovation and Future Plans
This summer, Dito Cujo will launch a Sauvignon Blanc, a renowned variety produced with the vineyard's unique characteristics. Additionally, a Reserva Tinto 2022 and a Reserva Branco 2023 are in the works, promising to showcase the vineyard's finest.
Community and Growth
Dito Cujo wines are now served in various Algarve restaurants and available in commercial spaces like Garrafeira Reis and Algarve Views. The brand's growth is a testament to João's dedication and the community's support.
Looking Ahead
Future plans include enotourism and expanding presence in local markets and events, ensuring Dito Cujo continues to shine in Algarve's wine scene.
