The Algarve's first water park, Aqualine, closed over 30 years ago, is set for a major transformation. Located between Altura and Monte Gordo, this once-popular destination is now abandoned but soon to be reborn as a rural tourism project.
Aqualine was a pioneer in the Algarve, opening in the late 1980s and quickly becoming a summer favorite with its large slides and family-friendly attractions. However, it closed in the mid-1990s, and despite various proposals, the site remained unused until now.
The Castro Marim Municipality announced plans to convert the area into a rural tourism venture, featuring three small hotels. This decision came after considering a more ambitious development plan, which was ultimately deemed too intrusive for the area's natural landscape.
The new project emphasizes sustainability and minimal environmental impact, aiming to preserve the surrounding green areas and avoid overdevelopment. The hotels will be adapted to the existing structures, offering a unique tourism experience that aligns with the region's low-density strategy.
The closure of Aqualine followed a tragic incident in 1993 at another water park, leading to stricter safety regulations. Many parks, including Aqualine, couldn't meet the new requirements, forcing them to shut down.
This redevelopment marks a new chapter for the site, focusing on sustainable tourism and respecting the local environment. It's a nostalgic moment for those who remember Aqualine's heyday, but also an exciting opportunity for the Algarve's tourism future.
