José Luís Carneiro finalized his team this Saturday, marking the beginning of his era in the PS (Socialist Party). Despite efforts to include members from the previous leadership, many declined, leading Carneiro to assemble a team from available members. He emphasized, “Ninguém é dispensável” (No one is dispensable), yet the lack of enthusiasm was palpable, with only 139 out of 250 members attending the National Commission meeting. His leadership was approved by 75%, but a quarter of the voters opposed or abstained.
Carneiro's team includes figures from the Pedro Nuno Santos era, such as João Torres and Pedro Costa, as well as critics like Jorge Sequeira. The team also features Ana Catarina Mendes, Francisco Assis, and Sérgio Sousa Pinto, who previously opposed Carneiro. The majority, however, are his close allies, including André Moz Caldas and Filipe Costa.
Carneiro stressed the importance of inclusivity and unity, acknowledging the challenges of internal criticism during a difficult period for the party. Carlos César, the party president, urged for internal cohesion and hoped for a fruitful mandate.
AD “nos braços da extrema-direita” (AD in the arms of the far-right)
Carneiro criticized the AD (Democratic Alliance) government for misinterpreting election results and aligning with the far-right. He accused the government of focusing on “virtual problems” while ignoring real issues, particularly in immigration policies.
The PS is now focusing on the upcoming municipal elections, with Carneiro highlighting their importance for the party's connection with citizens. The party also faces internal divisions over the presidential elections, with members split between supporting Seguro or another candidate.
