Lisbon could experience up to 50 days per year with temperatures exceeding 35°C by the end of the century, according to a group of experts in urbanism and sustainability. This alarming forecast highlights a "scenario of urgency" for the Portuguese capital, potentially aligning its climate more closely with that of North Africa if emissions are not controlled.
The experts have outlined a comprehensive plan aimed at transforming Lisbon into a "sponge city" by 2050, focusing on ecological infrastructures and rainwater retention solutions to mitigate rising temperatures. Among the proposed measures are the revision of regulations and incentives for green innovation.
These proposals, developed by 12 specialists, are set to be discussed with Lisbon's municipal authorities by the end of August, marking a critical step towards implementing sustainable urban cooling strategies.
