A PSP officer, serving in the Lisbon Municipal Police, was suspended for 75 days after being filmed assaulting a tuk-tuk driver in Praça do Comércio on May 30 last year. The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, shows the officer running towards the driver and headbutting him, accompanied by another policeman.
According to the decision published on the IGAI website, the officer was suspended "for violating the duties of correctness and decorum". The IGAI report confirmed that the actions occurred "during service, in the presence of others, and in a public space".
The IGAI also noted that the officer "acted with direct intent, in its most intense form, disregarding the self-control expected of him and acting in a reprehensible manner". The case gained significant public attention after the video of the assault went viral.
Following the incident, the then Minister of Internal Affairs ordered the opening of a disciplinary process against the officer. The decision was made after a proposal by the then Inspector General of Internal Administration, Anabela Cabral Ferreira, who first met with the Mayor of Lisbon.
