Lisbon's Mayor Carlos Moedas presided over a heartfelt ceremony on July 28, delivering keys to 42 homes and 27 non-residential spaces set to become local businesses. The event, filled with emotion and celebration, took place in a historic hall that once hosted kings and queens, now welcoming Lisbon's residents to their new beginnings.
A touching moment unfolded when a Ukrainian woman, overwhelmed with gratitude, requested an autograph from Moedas on her country's flag, symbolizing peace and appreciation for Portugal's welcome. This act highlighted the 'humility' and 'warm welcome' that define Lisbon's public housing communities, as noted by Moedas.
Under various municipal housing access programs, 2,706 homes have been allocated during Moedas's term, targeting not only the underprivileged but also middle-class professionals like nurses, teachers, and police officers struggling with city living costs. Additionally, a rental support program has aided 1,200 families in managing their monthly expenses.
The 'A Minha Loja' initiative marks a first for the municipality, transforming 27 non-residential spaces across 16 neighborhoods into businesses ranging from grocery stores to cultural venues. This effort aims to boost local economies, enhance community services, and foster social cohesion.
Highlighting the initiative's success, Moedas emphasized the importance of residents establishing businesses in their neighborhoods, thereby revitalizing local communities and promoting professional integration. The program complements the 'O Meu Bairro' contest, focusing on non-profit activities in social, cultural, and recreational domains, with applications open until September 5.
