Miguel Albuquerque, the President of the Regional Government of Madeira and a social-democrat, has publicly stated that the PSD should support the constitutional revision proposed by the Liberal Initiative (IL). He emphasized the necessity of this revision for both the region and the country, advocating for a return to reformist policies and moving away from political correctness.
During his visit to the 12th edition of the Madeira Classic Car Revival (MCCR), an event part of the 2025 Flower Festival in Funchal, Albuquerque highlighted the importance of the PSD aligning with this constitutional overhaul. He pointed out that delaying reforms is incompatible with the electorate's will, as evidenced in recent elections.
The IL's proposal, announced last Wednesday, aims to diminish the State's central role in the economy. Albuquerque supports this, listing essential reforms including the abolition of the Republic's representative position, expansion of autonomous powers, electoral review, enhanced powers for the Regional Assembly, and the inclusion of Madeira's heritage, currently disputed by the Constitutional Court's decision.
Albuquerque also stressed the urgency of judicial reforms, arguing that the 1976 Constitution no longer aligns with today's world. He warned against conservative stances that resist change, which could lead to public discontent.
On a lighter note, the MCCR event, featuring over 500 vehicles including international participants, was praised as a significant milestone for Madeira's tourism. Highlights included a 1936 Bugatti Type 57 Stelvio Gangloff and a Benz Dreirad from 1886, the world's oldest car.
