The Portuguese Parliament has approved the creation of an inquiry commission to investigate the political and management responsibilities of the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) over recent years. The proposal was introduced by the Liberal Initiative party.
Key Votes: The commission was approved with abstentions from PSD, PS, and CDS-PP, and support from Chega, IL, Livre, PCP, BE, PAN, and JPP.
Investigation Scope: The deputies involved will have 90 days to determine responsibilities related to political, technical, contractual, legal, and financial aspects of INEM, including during the strike in late October and early November 2024.
Focus Areas: The inquiry will also examine the international public tender process for contracting emergency medical air transport and the management under two governments of António Costa (2019-2024) and Luís Montenegro (current and previous).
Additional Objectives: The commission will assess the relationship between different political overseers and INEM.
