A Historical Commitment to Social Action

For 500 years, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa has dedicated itself to aiding the most vulnerable in society. Operating across various sectors, including nursing homes, schools, hospitals, convents, daycare centers, and community centers, its mission remains steadfast: to support the poor, unemployed, sick, elderly, abandoned children, the homeless, people with disabilities, refugees, and exploited women.

The Impact of Social Action

Social Action is the primary entry point for many seeking help from the Misericórdia. Behind every story of hardship lies a tale of resilience and overcoming adversity. One such story is that of Otília da Cruz, a 76-year-old who endured domestic violence and neglect throughout her life. Having finally escaped her abusive marriage, she found support at the Centro de Dia in Boavista, where her life transformed. “Now, at 76, I finally have the life I always wanted,” she shares.

Cláudia Balasteiro's Role

Cláudia Balasteiro, a social worker and director of the Boavista Day Center, emphasizes the importance of community engagement. Many residents are elderly and isolated, lacking basic communication tools like a telephone. Cláudia and her team work diligently to provide essential services, from daily meals and hygiene care to psychosocial support.

A Diverse Population Served

The center caters to a diverse group of individuals, including drug addicts, former workers, and those with mental health issues. In 2023, Santa Casa supported 1,347 individuals in its day centers, with numbers rising in 2024. The Emergency Assistance program also plays a crucial role in aiding those in dire need.

Addressing Vulnerable Elderly

Social workers inform the elderly about their rights and assist with healthcare and pensions. In 2023, 2,501 individuals benefited from home support services, showcasing the institution's commitment to those in need.

Challenges and Triumphs

Despite the challenges, including administrative complexities and resource shortages, the social workers remain committed to making a difference. Cláudia highlights the importance of empathetic care and community support, often sharing stories of individuals like Vítor Manuel Fernandes, a 79-year-old who found solace and companionship after losing his wife.

The Ongoing Mission

The Santa Casa continues to evolve, addressing the changing needs of Lisbon's urban population. Its mission to combat poverty and promote social inclusion remains as relevant today as it was 500 years ago. This article is just a glimpse into the impactful work being done, with more stories to be shared in the future.
