Eleven districts in the North and Center of mainland Portugal are under a yellow weather alert this Saturday, due to forecasted heavy showers, possibly accompanied by hail and thunderstorms, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) announced this Friday.
Weather Alert Details
The IPMA's yellow alert is in effect until 6:00 PM on Saturday for the affected districts. Porto, Leiria, Aveiro, and Coimbra are already experiencing these conditions, according to the IPMA.
Timing of the Alert
- Viana do Castelo and Braga: Alert starts at 12:00 AM Saturday.
- Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real, and Castelo Branco: Alert begins at 9:00 AM Saturday.
Weather Forecast
The IPMA predicts "showers, especially in the North and Center, which may be locally heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms in the North region." There's also a "chance of snow in the highest points of Serra da Estrela until late morning" and a "possibility of showers in the South region."
About the Yellow Alert
The yellow alert, the least severe on a three-level scale, is issued when there's a risk situation for certain activities dependent on weather conditions.
