A Bold Artistic Statement
Portuguese artist Bordalo II has made a striking statement by installing a massive Monopoly game on the ground of Praça Duque da Terceira near Cais do Sodré in Lisbon. This installation, titled 'Provoc', serves as a critique of the housing crisis currently plaguing Portugal.
The artwork, crafted from durable canvas, is a creative adaptation of the iconic board game that simulates real estate transactions. Bordalo II shared a video of the piece on Instagram, captioning it with the thought-provoking phrase: "Where the right to housing is like a game."
Previous Activism
In September 2024, Bordalo II also expressed his concerns regarding the housing situation at the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara in Lisbon. He showcased his work titled "Desalojamento Local" which featured four tents, emphasizing the urgent need to regulate the madness of speculation that strips dignity from many while lining the pockets of a few.
Social Critique Through Art
On March 10 of the previous year, coinciding with the last legislative elections, Bordalo II made waves by placing a trash bin in front of the Assembly of the Republic, filled with headless figures dressed in suits, symbolizing the disillusionment with politics.
In April, he created another impactful piece — a giant medicine box placed on the grave of former dictator António de Oliveira Salazar, labeled as a “Probiotic Antifascist” named “Liberdade.”
As recently as July 2023, just before the World Youth Day, he criticized the millions spent on organizing the event with his artwork “Walk of Shame,” featuring images of €500 notes laid out on a red carpet at the stage where the Pope would be received.
