Experts Signal Long-Standing Risks in Portugal's Electrical System
Recent changes to Portugal's electrical system over the past 25 years necessitated a review of emergency procedures for unexpected situations. Ana Estanqueiro, a leading researcher at the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology (LNEG), emphasized that indicators of potential difficulties have been evident for years.
In a reflection on the unprecedented blackout that struck the Iberian Peninsula on Monday, Estanqueiro noted that a similar incident occurred in 2016, where frequency fluctuations nearly led to a blackout. "The indicators were there, and those knowledgeable about electrical technology knew we were heading towards less secure ground," she stated.
Estanqueiro also acknowledged that perhaps there had been an overly optimistic view on the system's resilience, suggesting a need for urgent reevaluation of protocols to ensure safety in the future.
