Summary:

  • André Ventura presents Chega's proposals for the legislative elections, focusing on immigration and corruption.

  • Ventura challenges Montenegro, stating, "Get out of my way and let me be Prime Minister".

  • Proposes the "Manu Law" to deport immigrant criminals after serving their sentences.

  • Aims to strip citizenship from dual nationals convicted of violent crimes.

  • Plans to reduce construction VAT to 6% and eliminate national tolls.

During a 90-minute presentation, André Ventura unveiled Chega's proposals for the upcoming legislative elections on May 18. The party's focus remains on immigration and corruption, with a shift in slogan from "cleaning Portugal" to "saving Portugal". Ventura aims to present himself as the voice of the nation's heroes, emphasizing the importance of this moment for the country.

In a speech heavily criticizing both the PS and PSD, Ventura declared his intention to win the elections, stating that Chega is not participating to come in third or second. He challenged Montenegro, saying, "Get out of my way and let me be Prime Minister", after condemning the government for its failure to address indoctrination in schools.

The Manu Law and Immigration Reform: "No Room for Criminal Immigrants"

Ventura linked immigration to crime, referencing the tragic case of Manu, a young man killed in Braga while trying to protect women. He proposed the "Manu Law", which states that any immigrant committing a crime would serve their sentence and then be deported. He emphasized that "we cannot have immigrants committing crimes and remaining in Portugal", criticizing the PS and PSD for allowing this situation.

The party also aims to strip citizenship from dual nationals convicted of violent crimes and insists on a minimum contribution period of five years to qualify for social benefits. Although the plan to restore SEF was removed, they propose to reform AIMA to merge administrative and policing functions.

Additionally, Ventura champions remigration, pledging to be the voice for Portuguese emigrants wishing to return to a secure homeland.

Tackling Corruption: A Comprehensive Anti-Corruption Package

Ventura accused PS and PSD of being synonymous with corruption and reiterated proposals for asset confiscation from corrupt individuals. Chega aims to introduce a minimum sentence for serious crimes and extend the statute of limitations for offenses related to influence peddling and corruption.

The party's controversial proposal to raise the minimum pension to match the national minimum wage remains unchanged, as does the plan to increase salaries to €1,150 by 2029. They also propose a support program for businesses with high operational costs.

Tax Reforms: Lowering VAT and Eliminating Tolls

On taxation, Chega suggests reducing the construction VAT to 6%, reintroducing zero VAT on essential goods, and standardizing the VAT rate at 6% for all restaurants. They seek to lower the standard VAT rate from 23% to 21% and maintain a 15% corporate tax rate for companies in inland municipalities.

Ventura, who facilitated the end of tolls on former SCUT highways, promises to extend this to all national tolls, emphasizing its importance for business competition.

Health and Controversial Proposals

In health, Ventura aims to end the ideological divide between public and private sectors, criticizing the ideological blindness that hinders effective healthcare. He also advocates for life imprisonment for heinous crimes and the temporary use of chemical castration for repeat offenders.

These bold proposals are set to shape Chega's campaign as they strive to change the political landscape in Portugal.
