Fernando Salgueiro Maia, the face of the April 25, 1974 revolution, was posthumously honored by the Lisbon City Council with the Key of Honor of the City. This prestigious award was presented to Natércia Salgueiro Maia, recognizing his decisive contribution to freedom and democracy in Portugal.
Born on July 1, 1944, in Castelo de Vide, Salgueiro Maia was a military academy graduate who fought in the Colonial War in Mozambique and Guinea. On the night of April 24, he led his men from Santarém to Lisbon, where the next morning, at Terreiro do Paço, he confronted the regime's forces attempting to control the situation.
Carlos Moedas, the Mayor of Lisbon, highlighted Salgueiro Maia's humility and dedication, stating, "He changed the country without seeking fame or protagonism." A recent poll confirmed Salgueiro Maia as the most important military figure of the April 25 revolution for the Portuguese people.
The Dream of a Fairer Country
Natércia Salgueiro Maia recalled her husband's desire for a more just and equal Portugal, a vision he held since his time in Guinea. The moment at Terreiro do Paço, captured in a famous photo by Eduardo Gageiro, was described as emotionally charged, showcasing his conviction and courage.
The Key of Honor of the City of Lisbon is awarded to individuals or organizations that have significantly contributed to the city's prestige and development.
