This Sunday, seven emergency services across Portugal will be closed, with six in Gynecology and Obstetrics and one in Pediatrics, as per the schedules published on the National Health Service (SNS) portal.
- Vila Franca de Xira Hospital will have no pediatric or obstetric emergency services.
- In Almada, the urgent care for Gynecology and Obstetrics at Garcia de Horta is closed, a situation mirrored at São Bernardo Hospital in Setúbal.
- The same service is unavailable at Santarém District Hospital, Santo André Hospital in Leiria, and in Aveiro.
Health authorities urge the public to contact SNS24 (808 24 24 24) before heading to an emergency room for appropriate guidance.
Minister of the Presidency, António Leitão Amaro, recently highlighted the success of the emergency health plan introduced a year ago, noting fewer closures compared to 2024. He emphasized, "There are fewer closed emergencies and more open ones," particularly in Obstetrics in the Setúbal Peninsula, where no closures were reported this July.
However, contradictions arise as Barreiro Hospital in Setúbal suspended its Obstetrics Emergency and Delivery Block for 10 days starting July 9, and Garcia de Orta Hospital in Almada will close its Gynecology and Obstetrics emergency this weekend, July 19-20.
The government anticipates that by September, emergency services at Garcia de Orta Hospital will operate 24/7, year-round.
