The name of the new governor of the Bank of Portugal will be announced this Thursday, following the Council of Ministers meeting, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro revealed this Sunday. While details about the successor to Mário Centeno remain undisclosed, Montenegro emphasized the importance of selecting a competent individual capable of fulfilling the central bank's duties.
During his visit to the Chão da Lagoa festival in Madeira, Montenegro also reiterated his openness to dialogue with all political parties, though he ruled out any permanent governance agreements. "If collaboration required an exclusive contract with a specific party for occasional agreements, it would imply forming a coalition," he stated, affirming his commitment to avoid coalitions with either Chega or the PS.
The Prime Minister addressed the possibility of reappointing Centeno, noting that the decision could involve either retaining the current governor or appointing a new one. "Mário Centeno meets all the necessary requirements to continue as governor," Montenegro clarified.
This announcement comes amidst discussions on various policies, including immigration and IRS, where the government has engaged with multiple parties, including Chega. However, Montenegro stressed that any agreements would be incidental and not indicative of a lasting partnership.
