Esterline Gonçalves Género, the ambassador of São Tomé and Príncipe in Portugal, visited the Talude Militar neighborhood this Sunday, where many residents are from São Tomé and Príncipe. The ambassador described the situation as "dramatic" and urgent, criticizing the lack of communication from the Loures City Council regarding the demolition of precarious housing in the area.
A Crisis Beyond Local Authority
The ambassador expressed dismay over not being informed about the demolition plans, stating that the situation has escalated beyond the municipal level to a national concern. Despite attempts to contact the mayor of Loures, no communication was established, although a meeting with the vice-mayor occurred on July 10.
Demolition and Displacement
Loures began demolishing 64 illegal, precarious constructions on Monday, displacing 161 people. By the second day, 55 structures had been demolished. The operation was halted following a court order in response to a precautionary measure filed by 14 residents.
Support for Displaced Families
Of the 55 families affected, 14 are receiving support from the Loures Municipal Council, with 38 households assisted by Friday. Some families have found alternative housing with relatives or friends, while others have accessed the rental market with municipal support for deposits and first-month rents.
Ongoing Humanitarian Efforts
The ambassador has provided tents and food to those remaining in the neighborhood, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address the dire living conditions.
