Lisbon's Avenida da Índia Gallery, home to the city's municipal collection of contemporary art, is set to open its doors on June 26th. This permanent exhibition space, curated by Sara Antónia Matos and Pedro Faro, marks a significant step in showcasing Lisbon's acquired artworks to the public. Previously, these pieces were scattered across offices and storage, only making an annual appearance to display the city's latest acquisitions.
Carlos Moedas, the Mayor of Lisbon, revealed that the gallery will house between 150 to 200 pieces, with around 70 artworks on display initially. "It was impossible to exhibit everything at once, but this is a major improvement. These artworks were bought and hardly anyone saw them. It was a shame," Moedas commented.
The gallery, part of the Municipal Galleries network, aims to promote and disseminate visual arts, establishing itself as a permanent museum hub in the city. Its location opposite the Pavilhão Julião Sarmento, which will host the artist's private collection from June 4th, is set to transform the area into a new contemporary art district.
