Rui Tavares, spokesperson for Livre, has openly declared the party's ambition to become a governing force in Portugal. During a campaign event in Saldanha, Lisbon, Tavares emphasized the need to dismantle the stigma that the left lacks the vocation to govern.
"Livre wants to be a governing party; that's what we're preparing for. We believe this should be stated without any complexes because when you form a party and present yourselves to the scrutiny of your fellow citizens, it's because you have ideas and a team good enough to govern the country," Tavares stated.
He argued that the left has historically failed to clearly communicate its intentions to the electorate, a mistake Livre aims to avoid. "The fact that we clearly state our goals gives people confidence, and they mobilize to vote," he added.
Tavares also criticized the lack of transparency regarding post-electoral scenarios, suggesting that those who remain silent about their ambitions end up at a disadvantage. "Our challenge to the left has always been: say what your choices are, say them clearly," he remarked.
The Livre leader, who arrived at the event by bicycle, pointed out that the right has been more pragmatic and direct in this regard.
