FALL RIVER — The Festa season is officially in full swing in Fall River, starting with the city’s annual Day of Portugal event on the waterfront. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the celebration, promising a weekend filled with delicious Portuguese cuisine, a stellar line-up of entertainers, and activities for all ages.
When and Where?
The event will take place at the Gates of the City on Ponta Delgada Boulevard from June 6 to 8. Unlike previous years, the celebration has been condensed to three days, omitting the "Taste of Portugal" food tasting event.
What’s Being Celebrated?
Day of Portugal is celebrated annually on June 10, commemorating the death of the esteemed Portuguese poet, Luís Vaz de Camões in 1580. The festivities, dating back to 1924, are a way for the Portuguese community worldwide to honor their heritage and cultural traditions.
Admission Details
Admission is free, and everyone is invited to join in the celebrations.
Friday Night Kickoff
The festivities begin on Friday, June 6, at 6 p.m. with performances by the Get Lucky Band, followed by Banda Moda Nova with Luis Pacheco at 7:30 p.m.. The highlight of the evening will be Fernando Pereira, known as "the man with 1,000 voices," performing at 9 p.m., with DJ Dupla Mete Ca Sets closing the night at 10:30 p.m.
Saturday Highlights
Saturday, June 7, starts with the official flag-raising ceremony at 3:45 p.m., followed by the Santo Antonio Philharmonic Band at 4:30 p.m.. The evening will feature local bands Luis Neves and Eratoxica, with Portuguese star Nuno Ribeiro headlining at 10:30 p.m.
Sunday Family Fun
Sunday, June 8, is all about family with a Kids Fair from 1 to 4 p.m., sponsored by BankFive, offering games, face painting, and a magician. The adult festivities resume at 4 p.m. with Rancho Folclorico Recordacoes de Portugal, followed by Tony Borges and the Banda Euro at 5:15 p.m., and Zé Amaro, the "Portuguese Cowboy," concluding the event at 7 p.m.
