Lisbon's political landscape is set for a dramatic showdown as a left-wing coalition, comprising the PS (Socialist Party), BE (Left Bloc), Livre, and PAN, has been formed to contest the upcoming municipal elections. This alliance, led by Alexandra Leitão (PS), aims to counter the right-wing coalition headed by the current mayor, Carlos Moedas (PSD), supported by CDS and Iniciativa Liberal.
The agreement, expected to be signed this Friday, covers candidacies for all municipal bodies in Lisbon, including the City Council, Municipal Assembly, and the 24 parish assemblies. Notably, the PCP (Portuguese Communist Party) remains outside this coalition, arguing that the PS does not present a viable alternative to the right.
Key Details of the Coalition:
- Livre secures two spots on the City Council list and will lead in three parishes: Alvalade, Areeiro, and Avenidas Novas.
- The BE (Left Bloc) and PAN will occupy the sixth and eighth positions on the City Council list, respectively.
- The PS dominates the coalition, taking the first four spots on the City Council list and leading in the majority of parishes.
Cidadãos por Lisboa (CPL), an independent movement, expressed willingness to join a broader left-wing project but has not received a response. Meanwhile, the PCP is proceeding independently, with João Ferreira as their lead candidate.
This development sets the stage for a highly contested election in Lisbon, with the left-wing coalition aiming to unseat the current right-wing administration.
