A significant political development has emerged in Lisbon as a left-wing coalition prepares to challenge current Mayor Carlos Moedas in the upcoming municipal elections. The coalition, led by socialist Alexandra Leitão, includes the Livre, BE (Bloco de Esquerda), and PAN parties, and is set to be officially announced this Friday at the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara.
Key details of the coalition agreement reveal that the first four spots on the candidate list for the City Council will be occupied by the PS (Socialist Party), with Livre securing the fifth and seventh positions, BE the sixth, and PAN the eighth. This strategic arrangement underscores the coalition's commitment to a broad left-wing alliance aimed at unseating the current administration.
In a notable exclusion, the PCP (Portuguese Communist Party), which has already presented its own list headed by councilor João Ferreira, is not part of this coalition. The agreement also extends to the lists for the Municipal Assembly and the parish councils within Lisbon, highlighting a comprehensive approach to the elections scheduled for October 12.
The coalition's strategy for the parish councils is particularly detailed, with Livre leading the candidate lists in Areeiro, Alvalade, and Avenidas Novas, ensuring at least two female candidates in these areas. Meanwhile, the PS will head the lists in numerous other parishes, demonstrating the coalition's wide-reaching influence across the city.
Additionally, the BE has secured the right to place a member in the executive committees of three parishes, further solidifying the coalition's collaborative framework.
