Lisbon's Struggle with Child Urban Mobility
Lisbon has been identified as one of the worst European cities for child urban mobility, according to a study by the Zero association. The study evaluated best practices in 36 European cities, focusing on efforts to prioritize children in urban mobility decisions.
Key Findings:
- Lisbon ranks 35th out of 36 cities, with only Sofia, Bulgaria, performing worse.
- The study highlighted three key indicators: adoption of school streets, safe speed limits (30 km/h or less), and availability of protected cycling infrastructure.
- Paris leads the ranking, followed by Amsterdam and Antwerp, showcasing consistent performance across all indicators.
Lisbon's Performance Breakdown:
- School Streets: Lisbon lacks any school streets, placing it 33rd, just above Madrid, Munich, and Sofia.
- Safe Speed Limits: Only 5% of Lisbon's road network has a 30 km/h speed limit, compared to Paris's 88.9%.
- Protected Cycling Infrastructure: Lisbon has a 7% coverage of protected cycling paths, far behind Paris's 48%.
The assessment was conducted nationally by various associations, including Zero, in collaboration with Kidical Mass, Ecomood, and Lisboa Possível.
