In a day of reflection, the President of the Republic addressed the nation to make a strong appeal for voting in the legislative elections scheduled for tomorrow. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa emphasized that "voting at this moment is contributing to stability".
Three Key Reflections by the President
The head of state began with "three brief and direct reflections".
- "The world of 2025 is radically different from the world in 2024", he stated, highlighting the significant changes in international relations, especially with the return of the current U.S. president, affecting Europe, Russia, and China, and bringing unpredictability to the global economy.
- In a more complex and unpredictable world, not participating, not deciding, not voting makes even less sense than in previous elections. He warned against indifference to the gravity of the current moment, comparing it to "putting one's head in the sand".
- "Voting at this moment is contributing to stability in the midst of an unstable world", avoiding prolonged caretaker governments and ensuring predictability essential for confidence growth. He reminded that, constitutionally, no new elections can be held until May 2026.
A Call to Uphold Democratic Values
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also stressed that voting is "giving life to freedom, equality, solidarity, democracy, and peace", marking 50 years since the 1975 elections for the Constituent Assembly. He urged citizens to "vote tomorrow for Portugal's future".
