Cumplicidades Festival Returns to Lisbon
The Cumplicidades - International Contemporary Dance Festival of Lisbon is set to return to the capital from May 10 to June 2, featuring over twenty performances in what is described as a ‘risky’ edition.
This year, the festival will showcase twelve premieres, including eight absolute debuts, as announced by Eira, the organization founded in 1993 and led by choreographer Francisco Camacho, who launched the festival in 2015, marking its ‘year zero’.
Curatorial Team
The curators, choreographers Sofia Dias and Vítor Roriz, have curated a program that highlights both resident artists from Portugal and international performances. This edition will also incorporate creation labs, classes, audio guides, public performances, and discussions.
The curators describe this year’s festival as presenting “formats that reveal the different gradations of artistic creation in dance,” where the performance is just one of its many manifestations. They suggest that “Gradations” could be a fitting subtitle for this edition.
Opening Performances
The festival will kick off with seven short performances resulting from a unique research lab that brings together seven artists and five neuroscientists in collaboration with the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) and the Champalimaud Foundation, focusing on works by Ana Léon, Jeff Wall, and Rui Moreira.
Diverse Venues
Audiences can enjoy dance programming across various venues, including the Pavilhão Branco, Biblioteca de Marvila, Teatro Taborda, and more. Notable premieres include:
- “CatGut Jim” by Connor Scott at the Black Box of the Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB)
- “Melodrama Senza Te” by Bruno Brandolino at TBA
- “Mandíbula” by choreographer Josefa Pereira
- “Fuck me Blind” by Italian choreographer Matteo Sedda at the Black Box of CCB.
Special Features
This edition of the festival, which occurs every two years, is co-produced with CCB, where many artistic proposals will take place.
“Dobrez”, a performance by Spanish artist Sabela Mendoza, will be held at the Auditório da Biblioteca de Marvila, while “Rokatei”, by the duo Park Keito (Kotomi Nishiwaki from Japan and Miquel Casaponsa from Spain), will take place at Rua das Gaivotas 6.
The festival will also feature presentations from the Laboratório Dança Sem Idade, with artists over 45 years old, including Ana Caetano, Carla Sofia, and more, guided by Francisco Camacho and Diego Lasio.
International Exposure
As usual, the festival invites international programmers to attend, creating an opportunity for global exposure. This year, notable attendees include Olga Zitluhina from Latvia and Flávia Tápias from Brazil.
Artistic Dialogues
The festival will continue its dialogue with the plastic arts through two performances: “Fazer Ideia” by Inês Melo Campos and another by Andresa Soares, both engaging with current exhibitions.
Additionally, an event titled “Imagining Futures” will take place at the Champalimaud Foundation, where artists and scientists will share innovative projects in a series of lectures/performances that blur the lines between reality and fiction.
Dance Passport Initiative
The festival will also launch the “Dance Passport” initiative from May 5 to 9, offering free dance classes at various locations throughout Greater Lisbon, leading up to the festival's start.
